Martin Luther King, Jr. Day at Mount St. Mary Catholic High School is a day of reflection and action.

Rocket classes were in session on this historic day. Martin Luther King, Jr. was discussed in Rocket classrooms and students were offered the opportunity to participate in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day activities throughout the OKC metro.

Over 75 MSM students attended the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day opening ceremonies at the Freedom Center, participated in the Freedom Walk, listened to several state politicians and NAACP representatives, and finished the day watching the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day parade.

"Participating in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day activities with my classmates by my side was a great experience! It was so neat to see all different people from all backgrounds come together," said Miranda Blakley, MSM freshman.

It is our pleasure to announce that MSM senior, J. Michael Bond, has been selected as one of Oklahoma's two delegates to the US Senate Youth Program! In March, he will visit Washington, DC, where he will have the opportunity to meet with the delegates from the other 49 states, visit with Oklahoma's Congressional delegation, and see our national government in action.

The program is a unique educational experience for outstanding high school students interested in pursuing careers in public service. As a delegate, J. Michael will hear major policy addresses by Senators, cabinet members, officials from the Departments of State and Defense and directors of other federal agencies, meet the President at the White House, and participate in a meeting with a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

All transportation, hotel, and meal expenses will be provided by The Hearst Foundation. In addition, each delegate will also be awarded a $5,000 scholarship for undergraduate studies, with encouragement to pursue coursework in history and political science.

J. Michael is the second student in Mount St. Mary history to receive this honor, following John Teague in 2015. Notable alumni of the program include two current U.S. Senators, Governor Chris Christie, Karl Rove, and Oklahoma's own Robert Henry. I cannot imagine a better student than J. Michael to represent our school and the state of Oklahoma in our nation's capital. An incredibly bright young man of integrity, he will go far in life, and someday he will be on the list of "Distinguished Alumni" of this program.

Way to go, J. Michael! Rocket Pride!

Ethan O'Connor, a freshman at Mount St. Mary High School, was recently honored as the Central Region Winner of the Oklahoma Securities Commission Invest Ed® Students Tracking and Researching the Stock Market (STARS) program. STARS is a high school investor education project.

One of the primary goals of STARS is to raise students' awareness of money management, saving and investing. The STARS program requires students to complete an investment risk assessment, develop investment goals, research stocks, create an online portfolio, track stock transactions, and write a report. Report winners representing six regions including one state report winner are selected each semester.

After participating in the Invest Ed® program, Ethan wrote, "my knowledge of the stock market has increased drastically. Not only have I learned how to research and buy stocks, I've also learned invaluable lessons about taking care of my money and making sure nobody steals it."

Ethan participated in the STARS program as a student in the Personal Financial Literacy course taught by Francois Boda.

The Oklahoma Securities Commission is the policy making and governing authority of the Department of Securities. The primary mission of the Department is investor protection through the administration and enforcement of Oklahoma's securities laws. Oklahoma law prohibits fraud in securities transactions and requires the registration of broker-dealers, agents, investment advisers and investment adviser representatives and the registration of securities.

Way to go, Ethan! Rocket Pride!!
